The Representative wind orchestra with majorettes "Dimitar Mechev", often referred to as "Velingrad orchestra" or "Velingrad brass band", is a youth orchestra from Velingrad, Bulgaria. It is the first Bulgarian orchestra to win an international contest by outperforming 212 competitors in 1987 in Karlsruhe, Germany. The orchestra has many international tours behind, for which in 1997 the founder and first conductor, Dimitar Mechev, receives the Golden Hercules award by the International Academy of Arts in Rome. Since 2007 it's conductor is Dimitar Lazarov. It is founded in 1965 as a school orchestra. The first public event is a May 1st manifestation, while the first tour is in 1968 in Izmail, USSR. The orchestra wins of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th republican festivals of the amateur art. In 1979 it receives the title "Representative" on the 5th Bulgarian republican spartacaide. In 1984 the orchestra receives a plaque from the center of the amateur art in Sofia. It is the only amateur participant in the 1984 and 1985 "New Bulgarian Music" review. It also wins many international contests (more information in the "Tours" section). In 1978 Mechev decides to make a step forward and create a majorette ensemble. The first leader and choreographer of the ensemble is Lubomir Gugalov. In 1992 he was replaced by Bilyana Maslarova. There are 3 sub-ensembles, divided based on their age and height. In April 2010 they perform independently for the first time, winning in all competitive categories in a national dance competition. Over the years the orchestra's size has varied from 30 musicians up to 80. Many of the young musicians consider a musical career. The instruments include piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, horns, tubas, as well as a full percussion section with a glockenspiel. The repertoire includes music from composers Dmitri Shostakovich, Johann Strauss II, Giuseppe Verdi, Georges Bizet, Joseph Haydn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Klaus Badelt, instrumental arrangement of songs by Deep Purple, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Ricky Martin, as well as many marches and traditional Bulgarian horos.
